Ole Travland: Part V

The final chapter of Ole Travland's life following the death of his wife Daisy (Bagely) is probably more common than we would like to believe and an unfortunate commentary on how we treat each other.    The previous chapters of Ole's life can be viewed by clicking on the following links:

Following the death of Daisy, at some point Ole Travland was sent to the Clinton County Home in Washington township, Clinton county, Iowa.    Here is the 1930 US Census for Ole.  His entry can be found on line 53.

The Clinton County Home was a 'poor house'.   I do not know who came up with the term 'inmate' for people that have fallen upon bad times.    Apparently they viewed poverty as a crime and an indication they did not believe in people's dignity.  More about the Clinton County Home can be found here.

This final census for Ole Travland is more accurate than all the documents I've encountered since 1900.  This census lists Ole's age as 76, indicating he was born in 1854.    While not quite accurate, it's much closer than the years shaved off in the previous census records.     Ole was 74 at the time this census was taken on April 11, 1900.    It still states he was born in Illinois even though he was born in Norway.   They do list his parents correctly as Norway being their place of birth.

Contrasting the 1930 US Census with Ole's first wife, Mary Ann (Olson) it is interesting that following the death (or divorce?) of her second husband, she reverted to her first married name, Travland.  

I do not know how long Ole lived at the Clinton County Home but the following year, Ole Travland passed away on June 30, 1931.    Note the spelling of Ole as 'Olie'.

According to the death certificate, it appears the medical examiner wrote the cause of death was due to old age and much of it is illegible but appears at the end of the statement, 'way he lived prior to entering County Home'.    One might get the impression the M.E. was attempting to avoid any culpability should the Clinton County Home be responsible for Ole's death.

Ole's age was unknown and they estimated his birth year on the death certificate as 1861 and age as 70.    They also listed his profession as "common laborer'.  Even until the very end they were unwilling to lend any dignity to his life.     

Ole Travland was born January 3, 1856 near the Finnøy parish, Rogaland county, Norway.   He was the youngest child born to Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.   The Travland family traveled from Norway on May 8, 1868 to Quebec, Canada arriving on June 22, 1868.   From Quebec the family traveled to America and settled in Milan, Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois.

Around 1877, Ole married Mary Ann (Olson) possibly in DeKalb county.    Mary and Ole Travland had 6 children:  Lena Josephine, Clara Marie, Peter, Otto, Martin and Wesley.    By 1894 or 1895, Mary and Ole had divorced.    Ole remarried on April 19, 1900 to Daisy (Bagley) in Sycamore, DeKalb county, Illinois.   They moved to Clinton Iowa around 1903 where they remained for the rest of their lives.

*I've not been able to confirm Adolph Sheveland's date of death or any documents pertaining to him after 1924.   He also inexplicably went by the name of Peter for a period of his life.

Benjamin Lewis Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Benjamin Lewis Travland,  granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Benjamin was the youngest child born to Matilda (Ogle) and Lewis Travland.   He was born in Rochelle, Ogle county, Illinois on October 4, 1892.     Benjamin married Louisa Wilson, though I do not know the location or date.

He passed away May 21, 1975 in Beeville, Bee county, Texas and was buried at Colony Cemetery in Bee county.

Virginia Bell (Mortimer) Wyrick - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Virginia Bell (Mortimer) Wyrick, great granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Virginia was born November 26, 1916 in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas to Ida (Travland) and William Mortimer.     (I do not have her marriage information)

Virginia passed away April 13, 1972 in Victoria, Victoria county, Texas and is buried at Colony Cemetery in Colony, Texas.

Victoria's grandparents were Matilda (Ogel) and Lewis Travland.

Gladys May (Travland) Coffman - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Gladys May (Travland) Coffman, great granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Gladys was born 30, 1919 in Bee county, Texas to Stella (Berkeland) and Thomas Tobias Travland.   I do not have any information about her marriage.

Gladys passed away June 14, 1971 in Corpus Christi, Nueces county, Texas and was buried at Seaside Memorial Park Cemetery.

Gladys' grandparents were Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.

Louis Joseph Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Louis Joseph Travland, great grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Louis was born September 23, 1906 in Normanna, Texas to Stella (Berkeland) and Thomas Tobias Travland.    He was married on August 19, 1931 to Margaret "Vera" Lee McDonald in Beeville, Bee county, Texas.

Louis passed away November 26, 1969 in Corpus Christi, Nueces county, Texas and is buried at Seaside Memorial Park Cemetery.

His grandparents were Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Joseph Travland.

Clarence Fulton Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Clarence Fulton Travland, great grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Clarence was born June 8, 1913 in Bee county, Texas to Stella (Berkeland) and Thomas Tobias Travland.   He passed away December 26, 1968 in Corpus Christi, Nueces county, Texas and was buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Clarence's grandparents were Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.

Oscar Nance Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Oscar Nance Travland, great grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Oscar was born February 26, 1912 to Nellie Katherine (Nance) and Martin Lewis Travland in Pettus, Bee county, Texas.    He married Melba Isabelle Harvey, though I do not have any additional information about the marriage.   They were possibly married in Bee county, Texas most likely in the 1930's.

Oscar opened an airport in Bee county in the 1940's and called it the Travland airport.   There are also two aircraft named Oscar Travland which were manufactured in California in the 1990's.

Oscar passed away March 20, 1967 in Beeville, Bee county, Texas and was buried at the Glenwood Cemetery.

Oscar's grandparents were Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland.

Inga (Travland) Arno - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Inga (Travland) Arno, granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Inga was the first child born to Matilda (Vogel) and Lewis Travland (following the death of Lewis' first wife, Iverdine Finnestad).   Inga was born most likely in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois.

She married Hjalmar Ludwig Arno in Bexar county, Texas on September 21, 1905.   Inga passed away on November 15, 1966 in San Antonio, Bexar county, Texas and was buried at Mission Burial Park.

Willard Winfield Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Willard Winfield Travland, great grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Willard was born January 18, 1901 in Colony, Bee county, Texas to Hannah (Arno) and Peter Andrew Travland.   Willard married Mary Pearl Hanchett sometime in 1927.

He passed away in Port Arthur, Jefferson county, Texas on March 25, 1966 and was buried at the Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Willard's grandparents were Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Joseph Travland.   His maternal great grandparents were Mari (Iversdatter) and Ole Finnestad Sr.

Thomas Tobias Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Thomas Tobias Travland, grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Thomas was born May 18, 1879 most likely in Milan township, DeKalb county*, Illinois, the last child born to Iverdine (Finnestad) who passed away just 6 months shy after giving birth.    Thomas' father was Lewis Travland.  

Thomas married Stella Adline Berkeland in Bee county, Texas on May 21, 1901.   He passed away in Corpus Christi, Nueces county, Texas on December 5, 1964.

Like his brothers, Peter Andrew and Ole John, his maternal grandparents were Mari (Iversdatter) and Ole Finnestad Sr.

*It is unlikely he was born in Decatur, Illinois as it is over 3 hours south of DeKalb county.

Odin Alexander Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Odin Alexander Travland, great grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.



Odin was the eldest son born to Annie (Helling) and John Otto Travland.   He was born in Bee county, Texas on July 6, 1900.     Odin passed away October 18, 1964 in Beeville, Bee county, Texas and is buried at the Colony Cemetery.

Odin's grandparents were Susanne (Iversdatter) and Peter Peterson Travland.

Peter Andrew Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Peter Andrew Travland, grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter was born to Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland on May 28, 1877, most likely in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois.    He married Hannah Arno in Bee county, Texas on May 3, 1899.

Peter passed away on January 15, 1960 in Kerville, Kerr county, Texas.

Martin Lewis Travland - death certificate

Martin was born October 15, 1885 to Matilda (Ogel) and Lewis Travland in Rochelle, Ogle county, Illinois.    He married Nellie Katherine Nance in Bee county, Texas on February 24, 1909.

Martin passed away January 23, 1961 in Beeville, Bee county, Texas and was buried at the Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville.

Ole was born August 6, 1872 in Rochelle, Ogle county, Illinois to Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.   He passed away September 1, 1946 in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas

Laurence was born April 20, 1908 in Bee county, Texas to Susan Eola (Sikes) and Ole John Travland.   He passed away November 13, 1945 in Temple, Bell county, Texas.

Laurence's grandparents were Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.

Lena was born February 2, 1888 in Kansas to Matilda (Ogel) and Lewis Travland.    She passed away December 14, 1943 in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas.

Matilda was the second wife of Lewis Travland.

John Otto Travland - death certificate

John was the youngest child born to Susanne (Iverdatter) and Peter Peterson Travland.     He was born March 25, 1878 in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois and passed away April 10, 1943 in Kingsville, Kleburg county, Texas.

Anna (Johnson) Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Anna (Johnson) Travland, 2nd wife of Peter Peterson Travland.   Anna was born June 3, 1851 in Norway and came to the United States in 1883.   She married Peter Travland after the death of his first wife, Susanne (Iversdatter).   Anna passed away in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas on June 10, 1939.







































Peter Peterson Travland was the eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Agnes (Thompson) Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Agnes (Thompson) Travland, third wife of Lewis Travland.   Agnes was born May 15, 1862 in Wisconsin and passed away February 24, 1938 in Colony, Bee county, Texas.


Lewis' first wife, Iverdine (Finnestad) passed away of tuberculosis in 1879.   Lewis' second wife, Matilda (Ogel) passed away sometime prior to his marriage to Agnes in 1898.

Lewis Travland was the second son born born to Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Peter Peterson Travland - death certificate

Here is the death certificate for Peter Peterson Travland, eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter was born February 25, 1847 in Finnøy, Rogaland county, Norway.    After moving to the United States in 1868, settling in Illinois, Peter then moved to Bee county, Texas around 1893.     Peter passed away on July 30, 1923 in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas.
