Peter Travland: Trouble, Part II

I had previously posted about an incident involving Peter Travland and his use of a gun while passing a rural school in Shabbona, DeKalb county, Illinois.    That post included an update with notice of Peter's aquittal.

Peter Travland was the son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland and the grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

1940 US Census - Peter Travland

Here is the 1940 US Census for Peter Travland, son of Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland and grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Peter and wife Hannah (Arno) can be found on lines 9 and 10.   No employment information is listed for Peter though Hannah is listed as being a mail carrier.    The Travland family was living in Tuleta, Justice precinct 8 in the county of Bee, Texas.

Peter was born to Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland on May 28, 1877, most likely in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois.    He married Hannah Arno in Bee county, Texas on May 3, 1899.

Peter passed away on January 15, 1960 in Kerville, Kerr county, Texas.

1930 US Census - Peter Travland and Benjamin Travland

Here is the 1930 US Census for Peter Travland and Benjamin Travland, grandsons of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter (line #95) was living in Justice Precinct, Bee county, Texas with wife Hannah (Arno).   Living next door was his half-brother, Benjamin Travland (line #97), wife Louisa (Wilson) and their children, Agnes and Delmar.

Peter was the son of Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.   Benjamin was the son of Lewis and second wife, Matilda (Ogel).

Here is the death certificate for Peter Peterson Travland, eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter was born February 25, 1847 in Finnøy, Rogaland county, Norway.    After moving to the United States in 1868, settling in Illinois, Peter then moved to Bee county, Texas around 1893.     Peter passed away on July 30, 1923 in Tuleta, Bee county, Texas.

1920 US Census - Peter Travland

Here is the 1920 US Census for Peter Travland, eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter, (line #10) was living in Bee county, Texas with wife Anna (Thompson) and Peter's granddaughter, Amelia Mannes, daughter of Sadie Celia (Travland) and John Mannes.    (Sadie had passed away in Illinois sometime between October 31, 1899 and January 4, 1900)

Amelia's grandparents were Peter and first wife, Susanne (Iversdatter Skaar).

Living a few houses away was Agnes (Thompson) Travland, widow of Peter's brother, Lewis who had passed away a few years early.

Here is the 1920 US Census for Ole Travland and brother Peter Travland, grandsons of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

































Ole (line 78), divorced from Susan (Sikes), was living in Bee county, Texas with younger brother Peter (line 79) and wife Hannah (Arno). 

Also living at the residence was Ole and Susan's son Laurence and Peter and Hannah's son, Williard,

Ole and Peter were the sons of Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Travland.

1910 US Census - Peter Travland & Otto Travland

Here is the 1910 US Census for Peter Peterson Travland, eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter was living in Nueces county, Texas with second wife Anna (Johnson) and Peter's granddaughter, Amelia Mannes.   Amelia's mother, Sadie Celia (Travland) Johnson had passed away sometime between October 31, 1900 and January 4, 1901.

Living next door was Otto John Travland, (Sadie's younger brother), wife Annie (Helling) and their children, Odin, Sadie and Irvin Peter.

Here is the 1910 US Census for Peter and Thomas Travland, grandsons of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter (line 70) was living Justice Precinct, Bee county, Texas with wife Hannah (Arno) and their son, Willard.     Peter's younger brother Thomas, was living 2 houses away (line 79) with wife Stella (Berkeland) and their children, Ernest, William, Louis, and Lillie.

Peter and Thomas were the sons of Iverdine (Finnestad) and Lewis Joseph Peterson Travland.

Peter Travland & Carrie Larson - marriage #2

Following their divorce, Peter Travland and Carrie (Larson) married each other for a second time on November 8, 1902 in Dekalb county, Illinois.    

The above list of marriage licenses issued in DeKalb county is from the November 19, 1902 edition of the Sycamore True Republican.

Peter Travland, grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland had been briefly married to Carrie Larson when she had filed* for divorce.

Peter was the son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland.

1900 US Census - Peter Travland

Here is the 1900 US Census for Peter Travland, grandson of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.


Peter, son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Travland, was living in DeKalb, Illinois with his wife, Carrie (Larson) and her parents, Fred and Josephine Larson.    The rest of the household residents were Carrie's siblings, Frida, Frygva, Sam, Freddie, Emma, Tygo, Delia and Curtis.

Here is the 1900 US Census for Peter Travland, eldest son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland as well as Peter Travland, the grandson of Taletta and Peder.


Peter was living in Bee county, Texas with his second wife*, Anna (Johnson).    Peter was still working, employed as a farmer.

Two houses away was Peter's nephew, Peter Travland, son of Iverdine (Finnestad)* and Lewis Travland, living with his wife Hannah (Arno) and brother-in-law, Henry.   Peter was also employed as a farmer.


*Peter's first wife, Susanne (Iversdatter Skaar) had passed away October 5, 1880.   Susanne was the youngest sister of my great great great grandmother, Mari (Iversdatter Skaar) Finnestad.  Iverdine (Finnestad) Travland was the daughter of Mari.

Travlands in Bee County, Texas

A few years following the death of his first wife, Iverdine (Finnestad), Lewis Joseph Travland, the son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland married Matilda 'Tilda' Ogel on July 24, 1882.    That union produced five children, Inga, Martin, Lena, Ida and Benjamin.  

Sometime following the birth of Benjamin, their last child in 1892, the Travland family moved from Illinois to Bee county, Texas.    Lewis' older brother, Peter also moved his family to Bee county. 

The following list of names that settled in two communities located in Bee county, Normanna and 'The Colony' is an excerpt from the History of Bee County, which can be found here.

According to the historical account written in the 1960's by Magnus Beck, the Travland brothers may have moved to Texas in 1893.    Lacking a mid-decade state census record to confirm the actual year, it's difficult to find any corroborating evidence.

I have not found any confirming evidence that Taletta and Peder Travland's two youngest sons, Andrew and Ole Kristian ever left Illinois.

Peter Travland & Carrie Larson - marriage #1

Peter Travland,  grandson of of Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland was married to Carrie Larson on March 22, 1900 in Sycamore, DeKalb county, Illinois.

Continuing from yesterday's post, Peter Travland received more press following the incident of January 1898.

Peter Travland

Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland's grandson, Peter Travland made the local papers* in 1898.

Peter, a name used frequently in the Travland family, was the son of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Pederson Travland.       The Travland family probably followed the typical Norweigan naming patterns when they named Peter.

Rochelle Public School attendence - Travland children

A couple of years ago I had originally posted the 1895 Rochelle Public School's list of students and faculty on the Finnestad website for the Knutson children, grandchildren of Mari (Iversdatter Skaar) and Ole Finnestad.

I did not know at the time that two grandchildren of Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland were also attending the Rochelle grade school:  Martin and Peter Travland, sons of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Pederson Travland.

Martin, listed above, attended Third Room classes.

Martin's elder brother Peter attended Fifth Room classes with, Annie Knutson the daughter of Elizabeth (Finnestad) and Ole Andreas Knutson.    Elizabeth was the sister of Iverdine, the first wife of Ole Travland's brother, Lewis.
