1900 US Census - Mary, Martin and Wesley Travland

Here is the 1900 US Census for Mary Ann (Olson) Travland, daughter-in-law of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland.

Mary Ann was living in Rochelle, Ogle county, Illinois with her sons Martin and Wesley.    The census seems to indicate Mary was married and not widowed, though the handwriting isn't very clear.   I haven't been able to locate a death record or census for Mary's husband, Ole Kristian Travland and do not know what happened to him.

1900 US Census - Petra Tale Bertha (Travland) Johnson

The majority of the 1890 US Census was destroyed by fire leaving a huge hole in genealogy research.

The lack of a 1900 US Census for the two remaining children of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland, Andrew and Ole Kristian Travland seems to indicate they both passed away prior to 1900.    If I eventually stumble upon those census records, I will post them.

Here is the 1900 US Census for Petra Tale Bertha Johnson, daughter of Susanne (Iversdatter Skaar) and Peter Pederson Travland Jr.

Petra was living in Alto township, Lee county, Illinois with husband Elias and their children, Henry, Joseph, Simon and Andrew.    The Johnson family also had a servant residing at the household, Caroline Halverson and two boarders, Mortie Smith and John Richolson.

Matilda (Ogel) Travland and daughter Inga Travland

Here is a photo* of Lewis Travland's second wife, Matilda (Ogel) Travland and their daughter Inga.

Inga is to the left, Matilda or 'Tilda' to the right.    Tilda passed away April 28, 1897 in Bee county, Texas so this photo was probably taken at their home in Texas, shortly before her death.

Travlands in Bee County, Texas

A few years following the death of his first wife, Iverdine (Finnestad), Lewis Joseph Travland, the son of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland married Matilda 'Tilda' Ogel on July 24, 1882.    That union produced five children, Inga, Martin, Lena, Ida and Benjamin.

Sometime following the birth of Benjamin, their last child in 1892, the Travland family moved from Illinois to Bee county, Texas.    Lewis' older brother, Peter also moved his family to Bee county.

The following list of names that settled in two communities located in Bee county, Normanna and 'The Colony' is an excerpt from the History of Bee County, which can be found here.

According to the historical account written in the 1960's by Magnus Beck, the Travland brothers may have moved to Texas in 1893.    Lacking a mid-decade state census record to confirm the actual year, it's difficult to find any corroborating evidence.

I have not found any confirming evidence that Taletta and Peder Travland's two youngest sons, Andrew and Ole Kristian ever left Illinois.

Rochelle Public School attendence - Travland children

A couple of years ago I had originally posted the 1895 Rochelle Public School's list of students and faculty on the Finnestad website for the Knutson children, grandchildren of Mari (Iversdatter Skaar) and Ole Finnestad.

I did not know at the time that two grandchildren of Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland were also attending the Rochelle grade school:  Martin and Peter Travland, sons of Mary Ann (Olson) and Ole Kristian Pederson Travland.

Martin, listed above, attended Third Room classes.

Martin's elder brother Peter attended Fifth Room classes with, Annie Knutson the daughter of Elizabeth (Finnestad) and Ole Andreas Knutson.    Elizabeth was the sister of Iverdine, the first wife of Ole Travland's brother, Lewis.

1880 US Census Mortality Schedule - Iverdine (Finnestad) Travland

On a few occasions the US Census Census included a mortality schedule.    Here is the 1880 mortality schedule for Iverdine (Olsdatter Finnestad) Travland, the daughter-in-law of Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland.

The second listing shows Iverdine "Dinah Travelin" having died of 'the consumption' or tuberculosis.  Iverdine was the first wife of Lewis Travland.

Taletta Larsdatter & Peder Pederson Travland

Here is a photo* of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland, most likely taken in the 1860's in Haugesund, Rogaland county, Norway before the Travland family moved to the United States, based upon the photography studio listed on the back of the photo.

The photo may have been taken in Stavanger, Norway during the 1870's on a trip back to Norway, but without the lower half of the photo it's impossible to know.

With a little research, I located a photograph from the Jan Greve studio with the backing intact that resembles the markings on the photo of Taletta and Peder.

A short history of the photographer, Jan Greve can be found here (click the 'translate' button to read in English).

"Photographer Jan Greve was a studio photographer in Haugesund first (see nedanom), since in Stavanger during the years 1876-1895, in the years 1887-1895 with the drilling Mathias as companion."

Peder Pederson Travland Jr - return to the United States

Taletta (Larsdatter) and Peder Pederson Travland's eldest son, Peder came back to Norway and brought his wife, Susanne (Iversdatter Skaar) and their two children, Peder and Iverdine to the United States in 1871.

The Travland family sailed on the Nordens Dronning on May 13, 1871 from Stavanger, Norway and arrived in Quebec, Canada on July 14, 1871.     Below is the passenger list - the family can be found by locating entries 5th through 9th from the bottom.  Traveling with the Travland family was Iverdine Olsdatter Finnestad, Susanne's niece.

The left column indicates that Susanne and Peder's children did not survive the trip and died at sea.

Also traveling on the ship was Susanne's niece Rakkel (Rachel) Olsdatter Finnestad, Iverdine's younger sister, who is listed with her aunt Martha Iversdatter Skaar, the elder sister of Susanne.   My great great great grandmother, Mari (Iversdatter Skaar) Finnestad was the mother of Iverdine and Rakkel and the eldest sister of Susanne and Martha.

A transcription of the passenger list can be found here.

I had originally posted a couple of years about Rakkel and Iverdine Finnestad and their travels on the Finnestad blog.

Iverdine Pedersdatter Travland - baptism

Iverdine Laura Johanna Pederson Travland was the second child born to Susanne (Iversdatter Skaar) and Peder Pederson Travland Jr.

Here is the Fister, Rogaland county, Norway baptism record.

Iverdine (entry #30) was born on July 7, 1870 and baptized on August (month is difficult to decipher) 18, 1870.    Witnesses included her grandmother, Sigri Rasmusdatter (Susanne's mother), aunt Martha Iversdatter Skaar and uncle Rasmus Iverson Skaar as well as cousin, Iverdine Olsdatter Finnestad and his uncle (my great great great grandfather), Ole Olson Finnestad.

Iverdine was the granddaughter of Taletta Larsdatter and Peder Pederson Travland Sr.

Right below the baptism record for Iverdine Pedersdatter Travland was her cousin, Niels Rasmusson (entry #31) born to Inge Nielsdatter and Rasmus Iverson Skaar (the brother of Susanne Iversdatter).     Peder Travland was listed as a witness; not sure whether that was Sr or Jr but most likely Jr and proof he had traveled from the United States back to Norway sometime after the initial trip to the US in 1868 to be with his wife, Susanne for the birth of Iverdine.

Travland to America

The Travland family left Stavanger, Norway on May 8, 1868 sailing on the frigate Hiram and arrived in Quebec, Canada on June 22, 1868.

A more complete passenger list can be found here.

After arriving in North America, the Travland family eventually settled in Milan township, DeKalb county, Illinois.    Additional information about Milan township can be found here.

Were it not for the actions of the Travland family in 1868, it's possible the Finnestad family may have chosen another locale in which to immigrate.
